Memorial Day Celebration Guide

Memorial Day is a great kickoff to the summer season! Create a memorable celebration with patriotic decorations, outdoor games, and scrumptious food. As you have fun and celebrate, also take a moment to respectfully remember the courageous sacrifice of those in the US military who have died serving our country to protect our freedom. Consider a moment of silence to honor our military heroes or even have a veteran give a short speech. You might want to participate in a local parade or memorial service as well. Maybe have guests bring donations for Gold Star Families or another local veteran organization.

1. Memorial Day Celebration Decorations

Celebrating holidays is always more fun with family, friends and community! You could also organize a block party for your neighbors. Transform your outdoor space into a red, white and blue themed festival. String up lights to create ambiance after dark. Check out The Concrete Cottage’s spray painted lawn stars for an easy bold decorating idea.

2. Memorial Day Celebration Activities

Activities can include hiring a band or DJ, karaoke, face painting, and flag balloon darts. Many outdoor games like bocce ball are affordable and great for parties. Consider ladderball, croquet, cornhole, or giant jenga. Water balloon fights or water gun wars are a great way to cool down or maybe rent a giant inflatable water slide for the children and adults to splash down.  Consider including your pets in the celebration too!

3. Memorial Day Celebration Foods

Launch into summer with a Memorial Day backyard barbecue. Keep the party simple by having guests bring dishes to share.  Special food can be served to highlight your party theme including a slider bar, patriotic fruit skewers, a grilled pizza stations, or an all-American hot dog bar. Patriotic dessert can be as simple as store bought sponge cake with blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, vanilla bean ice cream, and whipped cream. Treat your guests with many possibilities of patriotic desserts and drinks.

4. Other Things to Do on Memorial Day

If you’d prefer a quieter Memorial Day, consider enjoying sales and promotions that usually run the whole weekend. This might be a good time to stock up on some new grilling accessories or treat yourself to new patio furniture for your outdoor living space. Maybe relax by floating in a pool, try a new recipe, or create a craft on your own!

Whether you have a quiet or elaborate Memorial Day celebration, pause with a thankful heart to honor our fallen military heroes. Enjoy some delicious food and patriotic music and maybe even catch some fireworks!

Spread the love
